On Tuesday, January 31, 2006, in a General Assembly of the HYATT HOUSEKEEPERS UNITED FOR OUR RIGHTS, we voted unanimously to begin public protests against the "30 Room Program." THE NEXT DAY, FEB. 1, 2006, WE BEGAN OUR DAILY PROTESTS IN ORDER TO DRAW PUBLIC ATTENTION AND SUPPORT FOR OUR CAUSE.

Every day, after a full day of exhausting work, we protested in front of the largest, most luxuriuos hotel in San Diego and cried out ¡HYATT ESCUCHA, ESTAMOS EN LA LUCHA! NO 30 ROOMS! Some people would ask, "Why are you doing this? Why don't you just talk to Hyatt Management about your concerns?"

Beginning on January 17, 2005 Hyatt management provided special "training" for us to try the new "30 Room Program." The program came with the expectation that we clean a room within an average of 10 minutes. THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE, and we knew that sooner or later they would make us clean the 30 rooms completely, and lay-off many of us since they could get more work out of fewer Housekeepers. Since we had no labor union representing us, our only option was to PUBLICALLY PROTEST! And this is what we collectively decided to do.
We put up with physical exhaustion, cold weather, intimidaton & pressure from management. Yet we knew we had no choice but to struggle for what is right. |
